Common Types of Air Cleaners
Home Use and Applications

Air cleaners are generally classified according to the technology employed to remove various sized particles and/or gases from the environment. The general types of technologies available for use in these include mechanical filters, electronic filtration and hybrid filters for the capture of particles and gas phase filters to control odors. Those which operate by chemical process, such as ozonization, also exist. The selection of a type of air cleaners should depend on the intended use of the filter. Filters' wide applications include:

  1. protecting the HVAC equipment and components,
  2. protecting the furnishings and decor of occupied spaces
  3. reducing housekeeping and building maintenance
  4. reducing furnace and heating equipment fire hazards
  5. protecting the general well-being of residents.

The first four of these applications can be accomplished with the lower efficiency filters generally used in central HVAC systems. The last, which has to do with health issues, will require much higher performance filtration.

It may not always be possible to install this equipment in older existing environmental systems. Thus, self-contained portable room filters must sometimes be used to obtain sufficiently high levels of filtration effectiveness.

The efficiency of filters is measured in terms of the particle size that the device can capture. In most cases, very small particles are the ones that penetrate deep into the lungs, causing health problems. Look for mechanical filters such as HEPA filters and electronic filters that can effectively trap large and small particles.

Overall, the American Lung Association recommends that proven source control strategies be employed as a primary means of reducing exposure to pollutants. However, physical studies which do not measure health effects do show that certain filtration systems are effective in removing certain indoor pollutants. Thus, as an adjunct to effective source control and adequate ventilation, highly efficient filters can be useful in further reducing levels of certain indoor pollutants. More research on the health benefits of all filtration systems is needed to provide complete evidence that would better address the circumstances of intended use. Manufacturers, clinicians, government agencies, and private industries can all assist with providing and interpreting this research in order to better inform the public.

The reviewed data provide little reason to endorse the use of inexpensive table top, appliance-type air cleaners, regardless of the technology they employ. In general, high-efficiency particle collection requires larger filters or electronic filtration systems.

The reality in most residences is that total elimination of a pollutant source is not always possible or practical. Individuals with severe allergy and asthma symptoms, whose symptoms are not alleviated by other source control and ventilation strategies, may want to try an effective filter in an attempt to aid in further exposure reduction. Although there is no proven health benefit from such a measure, some individuals report that they perceive filter as useful in improving their health status.

If the choice is made to use a filter, the reviewed evidence suggests choosing one that ensures high efficiency* over an extended period of time (at least several months) and does not produce ozone levels above 0.05 ppm, either intentionally or as a by-product of its design. If filters are to be used, they should either contain charged or uncharged fibrous media, or they should conform to FDA regulations for medical devices.
